"21-Oct-2011 - Phishing Emails – How to Stay Safe
We are aware that some of our players have recently received a variety of phishing emails: emails claiming to be from Jagex or RuneScape which are designed to steal your log-in details. We understand this can be frustrating, and we can assure you we are working hard to stop the circulation of these emails and to take down the fraudulent websites linked to them.
In order to help you recognise these emails, we have set up a dedicated new thread - Phishing Email Player Warnings - on the RuneScape forums, which contains a short guide on how to check if an email is genuine or not. This thread also lists all known email phishing scams and will be regularly updated with details on any new emails we become aware of.
How did they get my email address?
The chances are they have no idea you even play RuneScape. A common method spammers use these days to send phishing emails is to generate lists of random email addresses, normally of extremely large volumes. The law of averages means that at least a small proportion of these will hit the inboxes of RuneScape players. We are dedicated to fighting phishing emails and have never compromised your email addresses.
Need to report a phishing email?
If you receive an email which you believe is a phishing attempt, you can report it on our dedicated thread: Identifying Phishing Emails. To help us gather as much information about the sender as possible, we ask that you post the contents of the ‘Message Source’ here. Full details of where to find the necessary information can be found on that thread..""
""We are constantly working on new ways to help in the fight against phishing and we will, of course, keep you informed of any new features we can provide in the future to help you. In the mean time, the best form of defence is awareness, so take a moment to read the Phishing Email Player Warnings and the guide provided.
Kind regards,
Mod Sadie""
""Phishing Email Player Warnings
We are aware that some of you are receiving emails claiming to be from Jagex. We understand this can be extremely frustrating and can assure you the team are doing their best to remove any sites that are connected to phishing emails.
On this thread we will be publishing warnings on phishing emails that are in circulation. We have also put together this quick and easy guide to verify official RuneScape emails.
The Email Address looks like RuneScape?
Official RuneScape emails will only come from an @email.runescape.com email address. Emails from any other domains, are NOT from Jagex.
However, it is possible to 'spoof' an address to appear to come from a real address.
To check where your email is actually coming from:
Email Provider Method
AOL Open the email message
Click "details" under the "To" field
Gmail Open the email message
Click the down arrow next to the "Reply" button
Select "Show Original"
Hotmail, MSN and Windows Live Right click the email message
Select "View Message Source"
Yahoo Open the email message
Click on the "Full Headers" option (lower right hand corner)
If the email is from us, hopefully the header information should look like this:
Received: from mta.chtah.net
From: "RuneScape" @email.runescape.com
The link looks just like the real site?
Hijackers often try and hide links to their phishing sites behind legitimate looking links in their e-mails. You can add a link to any site on any text like this. But this means you can also pretend it's going to the RuneScape site like this http://runescape.com/. As you can see it looks like it's going to RuneScape.com, but it actually goes to Jagex.com.
To stop this happening, hover over any link with your mouse before clicking it. Your browser will show you the link in the bottom left.""
""What else can I look out for?
Bad Grammar/spelling - All our emails are quality tested and will have the correct spelling and use of grammar.
Attachments - Jagex will NEVER send you an email with an attachment.
Account Related Messages - See post below.
If you receive any phishing emails, you can report them here: Identifying E-Mail Phishing. Please post the contents of the message header (instructions of where to find this for each provider are detailed in the table above).""
